ὅπου particle denoting place (Hom.+), that can also take on causal and temporal mng.① marker of a position in space, whereⓐ of a specific location in the presentα. used in connection w. a designation of place, w. ind. foll. Mt 6:19f; 13:5; 28:6; Mk 2:4b; 4:5; 9:48; 16:6; Lk 12:33; J 1:28; 4:20, 46; 7:42 al.; Ac 17:1; Rv 11:8; 20:10 (here the verb is supplied fr. the context). πρὸς Καϊάφαν, ὅπου οἱ γραμματεῖς συνήχθησαν to Caiaphas, i.e. to his palace, where the scribes were gathered Mt 26:57. παρʼ ὑμῖν ὅπ. Rv 2:13b; οὗτοι... ὅπου σπείρεται ὁ λόγος those … in whom (= in whose hearts) the word is sown Mk 4:15. Looking toward an ἐκεῖ (Jos., C. (there) where (Maximus Tyr. 31, 5b) Mt 25:24, 26; Mk 2:4a; 13:14; J 3:8; 14:3; 17:24; 20:12, 19; Ro 15:20; Rv 2:13a; (thither) where Mk 5:40; 6:55; J 6:62; 7:34, 36; 11:32; 18:1.—On the pleonastic use of the pers. pron. after ὅπου s. B-D-F §297; Rob. 683; 722f: ὅπ. ἡ γυνὴ κάθηται ἐπʼ αὐτῶν Rv 17:9. Corresp. ὅπου … ἐκεῖ ( שָׁם... אֲשֶׁר) 12:6, 14. Cp. Or ὅπου introduces a subordinate clause that indicates the circumstances resulting in what is said in the main clause following it (cp. Pr 26:20; EpArist 149; TestZeb 7:10): ὅπ. διαθήκη, θάνατον ἀνάγκη φέρεσθαι τοῦ διαθεμένου where there is a will, the death of the one who made it must be established Hb 9:16. ὅπ. ἄφεσις τούτων, οὐκέτι κτλ. 10:18. The main clause can use ἐκεῖ to refer back to the ὅπ. of the subord. clause where …, there Js 3:16.—Used to express an opposite circumstance ὅπου ἄγγελοι οὐ φέρουσιν κρίσιν where (i.e. in a situation in which) angels pronounce no judgment 2 Pt 2:11.③ marker of cause or reason, in so far as, since (Hdt. 1, 68 al.; Thu. 8, 96, 2; Chariton 5, 6, 10; 4 Macc 2:14; somet. also in the combination ὅπου γε as Dionys. , 15 (iv B. C.):—modal Particle used with Verbs to indicate that the action is limited by circumstances or defined by conditions. In Hom. κε is four times as common as ἄν, in Lyr. about equally common. No clear distinction can be traced, but κε as an enclitic is somewhat less emphatic; ἄν is preferred by Hom. in negative clauses, κε ([etym.] ν) with the relative.A In Simple Sentences, and in the Apodosis of Compound Sentences; here ἄν belongs to the Verb, and denotes that the assertion made by the Verb is dependent on a condition, expressed or implied: thus ἦλθεν he came, ἦλθεν ἄν he would have come (under conditions, which may or may not be defined), and so he might have come; ἔλθοι may he come, ἔλθοι ἄν he would come (under certain conditions), and so he might come.I WITH INDICATIVE:1 with historical tenses, generally [tense] impf. and [tense] aor., less freq. [tense] plpf., never [tense] pf., v. infr.,a most freq. in apodosis of conditional sentences, with protasis implying nonfulfilment of a past or present condition, and apod. expressing what would be or would have been the case if the condition were or had been fulfilled. The [tense] impf. with ἄν refers to continued action, in Hom. always in past time, exc. perh. . 178; later also in [tense] pres. time, first in Thgn.905; πολὺ ἂν θαυμαστότερον ἦν, εἰ ἐτιμῶντο it would be far more strange if they were honoured, Pl.R. 489a; οὐκ ἂν νήσων ἐκράτει, εἰ μή τι καὶ ναυτικὸν εἶχεν he would not have been master of islands if he had not had also some naval power, Th.1.9. The [tense] aor. strictly refers only to past time, Pi.N.11.24, etc.; εἰ τότε ταύτην ἔσχε τὴν γνώμην, οὐδὲν ἂν ὧν νυνὶ πεποίηκεν ἔπραξεν if he had then come to this opinion, he would have accomplished nothing of what he has now done, D.4.5, al., but is used idiomatically with Verbs of saying, answering, etc., as we say I should have said,εἰ μὴ πατὴρ ἦσθ', εἶπον ἄν σ' οὐκ εὖ φρονεῖν S.Ant. 755

(Hom., Pi., trag.), also = οἴχομαι (S.). -- No derivv. A hypothesis on the PlN Οἰχαλία in Ziehen Arch. f. Religionswiss. 24, 51 f.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: With οἴχ-ομαι: οἰχ-νέ-ω cf. ὑπ-ίσχ-ομαι: ὑπ-ισχ-νέ-ομαι and Schwyzer 696. The enlarging η of the fut. also came into the perfect; from some semant. close example ( μέμβλωκα?) came the early attested οἴχ-ω-κα (Schwyzer 774 w. n. 2 a. lit.; cf. Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 424 w. n. 3). -- The main problem with οἴχομαι concerns the curious meaning, which seems to have been foreign to the durative-infective οἰχνέω (so οἴχομαι orig. aoristpres.?). An acceptable connection provides Arm. iǰanem (nasal pres. like οἰχνέω), aor. 3. sg. ēǰ (\< * oigh-e-t; cf. ᾤχετο) `come down, alight' (Scheftelowitz BB 28, 311); further there are some isolated Celt. and Lith. nouns: OIr. óegi `guest' (\< * oigh-ēt-; as γόης, πένης; meaning like Arm. iǰ-awor); Lith. eigà f. `course' (Pedersen Vergl. Gramm. 1, 101, Prellwitz s.v.). Polyinterpretable are Hitt. igāi- `perish' and Toch. B yku `gone'; cf. Kronasser Studies Whatmough 125.
